Deploying Next-Generation Methane Gas Detectors
eLichens has recently deployed a batch of Avolta50 sensors on a methanization facility of Chand’Energie near Vandeins, France. The site produces biogas from organic waste and injects the gas into the local network.
The sensors are monitoring with high accuracy the methane concentration at several places on the gas site. The data are feeding and algorithm which aim a localizing methane rejects and methane leaks on the site. Methane leaks induce both economic losses and environmental damage since methane impact as greenhouse gas is 28 times stronger than CO2 impact over 100 years.
With this installation, eLichens wants to provide a solution to reduce efficiently methane leaks in methane production facilities and evaluate residual rejects. The acquired data will help to refine the algorithm to get more and more accurate with time.
Today, the alternative existing tools to find methane leaks imply the human intervention on site of an expert controller, which is costly and cannot be done continuously. Alternatively, a solution based on sensors offers continuous monitoring, and no additional cost. In this perspective, eLichens, CEA Leti and GRDF agreed on a partnership to tackle this technological challenge and won a public tender to drive the Leakography (Fuitographie) program.
What is the Leakography program?
The Leakography (Fuitographie) program is an R&D project which aims at developing a solution to localize leaks origine on a gas site, and to provide a methane concentration map showing leaks on the sites. This project involves a partnership between eLichens, CEA Leti, and GRDF. As sensor manufacturer eLichens offers its expertise on CH4 sensors, and industrial process manufacturing. CEA Leti provides expertise on technical parts to enhance sensors components. As a major player in the French gas network, GRDF provide intelligence and expertise for field operations. The project is supported by BPI France, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region and Grenoble-Alpes-Metropole under the PIA programme.
