Whitepaper - Open field CH4 leak detection

Outdoor Methane Leak Detection

Detecting methane (CH4) leaks in outdoor settings has become a critical challenge, particularly for industries that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and addressing leak detection is crucial to reduce environmental impacts. Traditional gas leak detection methods often fall short in open-field environments due to varying wind conditions and rapid gas dispersal. In response, eLichens is building a specialized sensor capable of detecting methane concentrations as low as 1 part per million (ppm).

This whitepaper outlines the experimental approach for testing first a 10 ppm methane sensor prototype, highlighting its significance for industries looking to monitor and control methane emissions more effectively. This study takes place in the scope of the project Fuitographie that eLichens conducts with its partners CEA-Leti and GRDF.

Testing eLichens’ Advanced Methane Sensor in Real-World Conditions

The primary aim of the whitepaper is to present eLichens' advancements in methane leak detection technology, focusing on outdoor testing of our "Martyr" sensor, designed to identify and monitor leaks in real-time in open-field conditions. Gain insight into our testing protocols, sensor configurations, and the challenges posed by environmental factors such as wind and gas dispersion. These tests mimic industrial methane leaks, providing real-world scenarios for evaluating the sensor's effectiveness. By exploring the response of the sensor to varying distances, heights, and wind speeds, the goal is to validate the accuracy and reliability of eLichens’ technology under practical conditions.

Providing Industries with a Reliable Solution for Reducing Methane Emissions

For industries, the core objective of this whitepaper lies in the promise of an efficient, scalable solution for methane leak detection & monitoring. eLichens aims to help industries curb methane emissions by providing a robust sensor that can operate in unpredictable outdoor environments, typical in gas production and transmission facilities.

With methane detection being a growing regulatory and environmental priority, the implementation of this sensor as a more precise monitoring system, could significantly reduce operational losses while ensuring compliance with methane regulations, safeguarding both industrial infrastructure and the environment.
